In “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)” John Lennon popularised the line by the American cartoonist and writer Allen Saunders; "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans". Come the Fall is a story of procrastination and how we miss the ‘now’ we are living in. It explores how nature and environment can be exploited when people are too busy to stand in the way of those who want to monetise what should belong to all.
A traveller discovers a valley of unimaginable beauty. He pauses at the edge of the wilderness to take in the scene before making his way down to the valley floor. It is late so he camps for the night, planning to explore this Eden tomorrow. The next day he is delayed, but no matter – the land isn’t going anywhere; it is just more time to savour the moment of expectation before descending into the valley.
The day after that, another reason not to set out.
And so it goes on – there is always something else to do. Eventually others arrive, leaving the traveller on the rim of the wilderness while they embrace its beauty. Then others come, people with more selfish motives. The traveller gradually takes on responsibilities and starts living for other people while the valley is denuded of its innocence.
A story of how life gets in the way.
