Hay Writers' Circle Poetry Competition 2024

Hay Writers’ Circle Poetry Competition 2024 competition is open to everyone to enter, and this year we are accepting poems on the theme of FOOD.

The first prize poem will be £100, with additional cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd placed poems. Full details and entry form here

Our competition judge is Susan Evans. Susan has won a number of awards for innovation in engaging ‘hard to reach’ individuals, groups and audiences, before venturing freelance in 2014; writing and touring from London to New York, as an acclaimed spoken word artist. A stage and page poet, Susan is widely anthologized and published in various magazines and journals; nationally and internationally. Her poetry themes include food and travel.

New Children's Literature Prize

An exciting new prize will launch at the end of November.

From November 30 submissions to The Paul Cave Prize for Children's Literature will open to writers and poets from around the world.

"Writing an engaging children's story that grips the reader is difficult," says one of the judges, Tim Saunders.

"It's a great opportunity for budding writers especially when getting noticed by a publisher is one of life's great challenges."

Entries close February 28, 2024.

There are three categories:

Best short story - 5,000 words or under

Best flash fiction - 300 words or under

Best poem - 30 lines or under

Winners will receive a cash prize and a copy of the book.

Course in writing and illustrating picture books

Helen Docherty, a Swansea-based, internationally published children's author and author and illustrator Thomas Docherty, are running a residential course in Writing and Illustrating Picture Books on the Gower peninsula in South Wales in September.
