 PLEASE NOTE:  These sessions take place in the “Mary Jane” railway carriage behind the Goods Shed

 On each of these ‘WAGS’ sessions, being held in our railway carriage “Mary Jane” behind the Goods Shed, we have visiting published writers from various genres who, for the first half of the evening, will present, read and talk about their work.

Then, after a break for refreshments, there is an ‘open mic’ session in which the floor is open to any writers in the audience who may like to share and read a piece of their own work – just sign up to share as you come in.

The Past on a Page

 This month we bring you three published writers from the Bristol area  – Ali Bacon, Jean Burnett and Kerry Postle –  who have teamed up to provide writing events focusing on historical fiction. Their historical/geographical range covers from Renaissance Italy to the Spanish Civil War, taking in the Regency and Victorian periods along the way.

 Ali Bacon

A graduate of St Andrews University, Ali Bacon lives in south Gloucestershire and writes contemporary and historical fiction mainly set in Scotland In the Blink of an Eye (Linen Press 2018), her first historical novel, was listed in best Scottish novels of 2018. It takes the form of themed short stories set in Victorian Edinburgh inspired by the life and work of an artist and early photographer. Her short stories have appeared in a number of anthologies and she is co-judge for the Stroud Short Stories event.  She has read her work in Bristol , Bath, Stroud and at festivals in Cheltenham and St Andrews .

 Jean Burnett

Has a Master’s Degree from the University of Wales ( Cardiff ) and spent several years living in South America . Her first two novels Who Needs Mr Darcy? (Little Brown) and The Bad Miss Bennet Abroad were published by Little Brown and Canelo respectively. Under the pen name Fran Kempton, she has embarked on an Italian trilogy inspired by Renaissance artists and musicians. The first of these, The Devil’s Music, came out in autumn 2018, the second, inspired by the ground-breaking woman painter Artemisia Gentileschi is nearing completion.  Jean has also worked as a freelance journalist and an advertising copywriter.

 Kerry Postle is a former secondary school teacher, is published by HQ Digital UK/HarperCollins. The Artist’s Muse, a novel about the stormy relationship between Egon Schiele and Wally Neuzil, was published as an e-book in 2017. A Forbidden Love, set during the Spanish Civil War, came out as an e-book in April 2019, and will come out in paperback this June. She is currently working on a third novel about the Renaissance artist Raphael to be called The Woman in the Painting.
