Haiku at Slimbridge
Booking is now open for Haiku at Slimbridge; a visit to the famous wildlife sanctuary in Gloucestershire, in the south west of England, where Call of the Page (Alan Summers and Karen Hoy) will be holding a haiku poetry workshop on April 6th 2019. More information here.
Alan Summers and Karen Hoy are running the Haiku at Slimbridge event. This is a visit to the famous wildlife sanctuary, where Call of the Page will be holding a haiku poetry walk, and workshop, known as a "ginko" on April 6th 2019.
Call of the Page (formerly With Words) is a small creative writing, literature and literacy organisation with an international outlook, based in Wiltshire in the South West of England.
We love the power of words, from single words, to three-thousand verse community poems, and this is reflected in the past events of With Words and its colleagues.
The courses, events and activities we run are largely coloured by our enthusiasm for Asian poetry forms, particularly the Japanese forms haiku and tanka. Other forms that interest us are haibun, sonnets, renga, and longform poetry.
Our mission is to help people to make the most of words - whether that's through advanced creative writing or discovering the meaning and power in just one word.
We have the pleasure of working with some really talented writers, but it's also very rewarding for us to help advance verbal and written literacy in those who are currently under-served through educational circumstance, or are under confident in the literacy they already have.
We currently operate under the "sole trader" status of Alan Summers. Our medium-term plan is to establish official not-for-profit status as a Community Interest Company.

IAN McEWAN TO HEADLINE STROUD BOOK FESTIVAL 2019
The Directors of the Stroud Book Festival are delighted to announce that this year’s Festival will be held from 6 - 10 November 2019. It will be headlined by Booker-winning author (and Stroud Book Festival patron) Ian McEwan, who will be in conversation about “Machines Like Me”, his subversive and entertaining new novel about artificial intelligence, which poses fundamental questions about what makes us human.
The full Stroud Book Festival line-up will be revealed this summer and will aim to build on the success of the 2018 Festival, which finished its 5-day run with record ticket sales, sell-out events and a line-up widely praised both for its variety and broad appeal. The Festival programme will once again include a Schools Day, writing competitions, Stroud Short Stories and much more besides.
Stroud Book Festival’s Artistic Director Caroline Sanderson says ‘We’re delighted that Ian McEwan has agreed to appear at this year’s Festival, and look forward to announcing more exciting events in the coming weeks. Children’s Artistic Director, Jane Churchill and I are already hard at work to bring a host of authors to Stroud who will animate, educate and entertain our audiences this coming November.’
Festival Director Paul McLaughlin says: ‘We are hugely grateful for the support we received from the local business community in 2018 and look forward to partnering again with so many brilliant Stroud companies and organisations. We are also very excited by the prospect of working closely with the new team at the Subscription Rooms as both venue and box office.’
